The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization welcomed the deposit of the instrument of accession of Jordan on August 14, 2008 to the Nice Agreement Concerning the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks. The treaty entered into force in the country on November 14, 2008.

As a result of this new development, the Jordanian Trademark Office (JTO) announced that it will accept trademark applications using the 9th Edition of the Nice International Classification, starting November 14, 2008. For a long time before that, the JTO followed the 7th Edition of the Nice Classification, which is limited to 42 classes only. Class 42 of the 7th Edition included diverse and unrelated services such as computer programming, restaurants, and surgery. With the introduction of the 9th Edition, the scope of class 42 has been limited and re-classified into additional new classes: 43, 44 and 45.

The JTO will soon decide on how it will treat pending trademark applications as well as trademark registrations in class 42 following the new classification system. We will be reporting on this in due course.
