Around one million counterfeit tablets of the widely-used GlaxoSmithKline’s PANADOL painkillers were destroyed in Yemen on August 29, 2007. The destruction, considered one of the largest in the region, was attended by delegates from the Yemeni Supreme Board of Drugs & Medical Appliances, the Ministry of Health, the Public Prosecution’s Office, as well as representatives from Saba & Co. IP’s Office in Yemen. The fake drugs came in packages bearing the word mark PANADOLE (with the suffix “E”) along with an oval design that was nearly indistinguishable from that of the real products.

A criminal case against the perpetrators was initiated by the Public Prosecution. The violators were required to sign an undertaking not to import, sell, or distribute any counterfeit drugs belonging to GlaxoSmithKline.
