Saudi Arabia’s aggressive approach to IP enforcement has resulted in the seizure of a massive amount of counterfeit goods, underlining the scale of IP violations. The blocked websites were targeted for their role in facilitating IP infringements within the Saudi jurisdiction.
Surge in IP Registrations
Amidst heightened enforcement, there was a noticeable increase in IP registrations in 2023. The SAIP received 7,048 patent applications, marking a 21 percent rise from the previous year. Trademark registration applications also saw a 13 percent increase, with 45,325 filings, alongside a 29 percent jump in industrial design applications to 1,942.
By strengthening IP rights enforcement, Saudi Arabia aims to attract more business and investment, positioning itself as a leader in the global knowledge economy.
