In the scope of the Lebanese government’s continuous efforts to deter Intellectual Property theft, an Information Technology and Intellectual Property Rights Law Enforcement Office was established as a new section within the judiciary police department which falls under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The main duties of the IT and IP Rights Law Enforcement Office are to curb the levels of software, copyright, and music piracy in the country and to combat cyber and internet-related crimes such as computer intrusion (hacking), password trafficking, and internet fraud. Subsequent to its establishment, the Office proceeded with a number of large-scale raids on commercial stores which resulted in the confiscation of around 4,000 unlicensed software copies.
