Kuwait’s Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) has officially launched the first phase of the .kw domain registration service as part of a broader initiative to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure. This move, effective September 23, 2024, is seen as a significant step in promoting Kuwait’s online presence and supporting local businesses.

The initial phase, known as the “Sunrise Period,” provides priority access to government entities, existing registrants of third-level domains (such as .com.kw, .net.kw, .org.kw), and trademark holders. These groups are encouraged to secure their .kw domain names during this period, which will last for six months. The initiative aims to bolster Kuwait’s digital identity while providing more accessible online platforms for local organizations.

Following the Sunrise Period, the registration process will move into the “Land Rush Period,” where domain names will be offered at premium rates. This will eventually be followed by the “General Availability” phase, allowing the wider public to register domains at reduced fees.

This phased rollout ensures a fair and structured registration process, benefiting both businesses and public institutions that wish to enhance their digital footprint within Kuwait.
