The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) is set to expand its role within the international intellectual property framework by officially commencing operations as an International Searching Authority (ISA) and International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA) under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system. This appointment, confirmed by the PCT Assembly in July 2023, marks a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia’s intellectual property sector. SAIP will start functioning in these capacities on December 15, 2024.
SAIP’s new status enables it to conduct international searches and preliminary examinations, providing applicants with vital insights on the patentability of their inventions at the international stage. This development positions Saudi Arabia among the few countries designated as an ISA and IPEA, highlighting the country’s commitment to fostering a robust IP framework that aligns with international standards.
Information regarding the applicable fees for SAIP’s services as an ISA and IPEA will be available in the forthcoming “PCT Information Update.” Further details will be published in the PCT Applicant’s Guide, specifically in Annexes D and E, providing guidance to applicants and stakeholders on utilizing SAIP’s services.
