GCC: New WIPO Publishing System Enhances Patent Application Access

The Secretariat General for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) has introduced the WIPO Publish System, revolutionizing the electronic publishing of patent applications in the region. This initiative stems from a Memorandum of Understanding between the GCC Patent Office and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

From October 1 to 5, 2023, a team of WIPO experts collaborated with GCC Patent Office specialists on procedures and technical updates. This partnership culminated in the implementation of the WIPO Publish System, which adheres to international standards established by WIPO, including the widely adopted ST.36 standard.

The system offers multiple benefits, including streamlined exchange of published patent data and documents among GCC states and internationally. It also facilitates access to applications filed with the International Bureau of WIPO under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Additionally, the WIPO Publish System enhances search capabilities for international patent applications, providing bibliographic data in both Arabic and English.

By aligning with global best practices, this advancement strengthens the GCC’s intellectual property framework, supporting innovation and collaboration across the region.
