Ghana has officially ratified the ARIPO Arusha Protocol for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, joining Rwanda, São Tomé e Príncipe, and Cape Verde. This ratification initiates the Protocol’s implementation on November 24, 2024, enhancing the legal framework for protecting plant breeders’ rights across the region.
The Arusha Protocol, adopted in 2015, aims to protect new plant varieties, promoting agricultural innovation through a robust intellectual property framework.
ARIPO, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization, harmonizes IP laws among its 21 member states, fostering regional cooperation and economic development. This move by Ghana underscores the importance of strong IP protection in driving agricultural advancements and supporting breeders’ innovations.
