The Iraqi Trademark Office (TMO) has officially discontinued the local subclassification of goods and services—commonly referred to as the alphabetical numbering of class headings—following its adoption of the 11th edition of the Nice Classification on January 19, 2025.

Under this updated framework, applicants must now specify the basic (serial) number corresponding to pre-approved goods or services as defined in the 11th edition of the Nice Classification system. Class headings can no longer be claimed, and custom-written specifications are not permitted.

For renewals and recordals, applications must now be accompanied by a reclassification request, transitioning from the previously used 7th edition to the newly adopted 11th edition.

This marks a significant shift in Iraq’s trademark registration process, aligning it more closely with international classification standards.
