The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) has recently published a new application for a sound trademark, marking a significant development in recognizing non-conventional trademarks within the region.

The sound trademark, filed under the Nice Classification Class 35, pertains to advertising, business management, organization, administrative affairs, and office functions. The mark’s publication date was November 28, 2024, with the initial application submitted on March 17, 2024.

Notably, this is the first sound trademark applied for and published on SAIP’s new portal, launched in December 2023. The dedicated publication website, introduced as part of the portal, marks a streamlined approach to trademark applications and publications in Saudi Arabia.

Sound trademark registrations are not commonly filed in Saudi Arabia, with the first such application recorded only in 2020. In fact, non-conventional trademark applications, such as sound, scent, and motion marks, remain relatively uncommon across the whole region. While there has been some progress in recognizing these types of trademarks, they are still in the early stages of adoption.

Most countries in the region continue to focus on conventional trademarks. However, the introduction of modern trademark laws, including the GCC Trademark Law, has started to pave the way for broader protection of non-traditional marks, aligning with global trends.
